Tillers Revisiting
by Jack Lewin, Class of 1963
They were the best of times
A carefree era of slower pace. And the grace of prosperity;
A simpler time it was, though rich with memories for posterity--
That are hard to really share except with each other.
We awakened to life in an unspoiled land of remarkable beauty
Between mountains and a still-abundant Pacific,
Bathed in the scents of orange and lemon blossoms and eucalyptus
We had fun in the sun, and life was quite terrific
For the Tillers of Tustin.
We were there before the teeming masses came--
We saw it at its best
The golden days of the west
The ivy-covered TUHS
Was for us a kind of nest
To prepare us for the rest
Of life's strifes, inequities,
And other real-world tests.
And I quess it's a bit of a shame
That it will never be the same
For the Tillers
Of good 'ole Tustin High.
But, certainly, there's little reason to be sad
In fact we should be exceedingly glad
For the memories that we've had
And for being the people that the Mamas and the Papas
Were California-dreaming about.
We were innocent then--mostly--
As were the times--(in Tustin anyway)--
And we can be grateful, fellow Tillers,
Not only for the old (and I mean old) friends-
Or for the good times of youth we spent together-
But that we can savor
The recognition of the special time
In the remarkable place
Where we all came of age...
